Population Connection
This was a concept guerrilla ad campaign designed for the non-profit, Population Connection. Population Connection strives to bring reproductive rights and information about uncontrolled population growth to the world.
This campaign is intended for American citizens and people in other developed countries. Those of us that are able to live in areas where our basic resources are available often times operate blind to the plight of limited or unavailable resources. In a world where everything is so convenient for us, it can be hard to fully accept the issues that could arise and the need for action.
For this campaign, Population Connection will work with a group of guerrilla advertisers and enthusiasts who would go into the world and "population jam" different public areas in ways that bring attention to three resources that dwindle in even developed countries like the U.S. when population runs uncontrolled. After "jamming" a resource, the Population Jammers will leave a Population Connection sticker/call to action.
For lack of usable water, the Population Jammers would use a non-harmful, temporary, organic dye. They would put this dye in any and every accessible public water system—from water coolers, to public fountains, to even unsuspecting persons' with their backs turned water bottles.
For dwindling food, Population Jammers will go into public grocery stores and buy out whole stocks of food. Sometimes specific items, sometimes a whole self. After their purchase they will donate the food to a nearby shelter. Later, when Jane Doe goes to the store to buy a loaf of bread, she will find that she cannot procure said bread because of inadequate resources.
Finally, Population Jammers will address lack of energy for larger populations. Population Connection will have available specialized light switch plates that do not allow the light to turn on. Jammers are taking these plates and trading them for the functional ones in public areas (where safety will not be an issue like restrooms, classrooms, and personal offices) to show people the inconveniences lack of power can create.
